Preview | Sangue Novo: DavidCatalan AW15/16 [Repost]

Entrevista originalmente publicada aqui. Interview originally published here.

Last October, DavidCatalán won the Samsung Ego contest, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid's platform for emergent Spanish designers. At Sangue Novo, the brand will show part of "No Signal", the collection recently presented in the Madrid Fashion Week.

What was the starting point of this collection?
The main reference was TV interference. Then, the expression “No Signal” came up, and we actually named the collection after it. We just tried to explore this idea of no signal and incorporate it into the collection.

How did you do that?
We decided to create some imperfections on the fabrics, some defects or some stains, for example. We have this orange denim that isn’t homogeneous, it has some lighter parts.
In this collection, we have a chromatic chronology: we start with nude tones and the final outfits are brown. In the middle, there’s a lot of red, which is a reference to the “red noise”.

Is there any connection between your previous collection and this one?
All the items we create are very detailed. That’s something we always do. In that sense, the two collections are similar because they have a lot of details and the finishes are similar. The silhouette is still oversized and we have another cape dress, which is some sort of a fetish of mine. One can see that I designed both collections, but they are different, of course.

Is there anything in this collection that stands out?
I think one of the reasons why we stand out and actually won last contest is the fact that we like to interact with the materials. Instead of using the same fabric in the same way, we try to find out new techniques, so that the same fabric looks different.

How do you feel about the show?
We have good expectations and I think this is a strong collection. In the end, this is a collection that really defines our brand, because of its unisex aesthetics, and the use of technology, as far as the fabrics and the details are concerned.
